Michael’s of Mount Merrion do not take themselves too seriously and this is seen in the quirkiness of the dishes; pigs ears, surf ‘n’ turf, deep fried brie – it’s the finest of food without any of the notions.

DISH THE DETAILS…

Michael’s of Mount Merrion is the creation of chef Gaz Smith, who took on the business (name and all) back when it was a deli-style counter. As the story goes, he was so broke at the time that he couldn’t afford to change the signage; so Michael’s it was – and Michael’s it remains.

Now one of three, Michael’s in Mount Merrion is the OG. As a former local in the area, I know this strip of shops as the “Top Shops”, and as far as I know, Michael’s was once a residential unit. So, you are literally sitting in someone’s old living room – and that is very much the vibe.

Yes, there are white tablecloths and a highly professional crew who clearly know their craft. But something about Michael’s makes you feel like you are in someone’s home. There is warmth, passion and just a suggestion of mischief…I’d love to be a fly on the wall at this team’s knock-off drinks.

THE FOOD

The menu is unapologetic in bringing you the best steak, fish and a barrel-load of wines to choose from. There are vegetarian options, but that is not where their passions lie. Michael’s are known for selecting the freshest and finest seafood and serving it up for their hungry patrons, and that is exactly what they do.

While they are known for their standards and quality, they do not take themselves too seriously and this is seen in the quirkiness of the dishes; pigs ears, surf ‘n’ turf, deep fried brie – it’s the finest of food without any of the notions.

Eat the brie.

Eat the pasta.

Eat the seafood.

Drink the wine.

And then, save room for dessert 🙌

O is for – Osteria Lucio

Osteria Lucio is very literally tucked away from the rest of Dublin in a building called The Malting Tower in Grand Canal Quay. The ingredients are seasonal, local and carefully selected for flavour and quality. The wines are all from Italian smallholdings. The coffee-infused Negronis are stupidly good. No really. Have two.
